Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
At the core of the Africa Literacy Project is the belief that literacy is a bridge to opportunity. At the launch of the project in Pizza Hut Luanda, Angola, that belief was reaffirmed.
The event in Angola was the second stop of the Slice of Africa, and thanks to an exceptional effort by Helena Pereira (Operational Manager in Angola) and her team, the day was a stellar success. Media, government dignitaries, and the Pizza Hut team were united in making the day a massive success, and properly launching the African Literacy Project in Angola.
Shaista Imam and Daniel Falconer from Pizza Hut South Africa joined the team for the Angola event.
“Such a rewarding experience to spend time with great kids today, and appreciative of the special team we have here in Angola” said Daniel after the event.
Shaista echoed this sentiment, “Amazing to see the kindness and compassion extended to the children from the Escola Primária Irmão Carlos Tesché school. What truly stood out is how the team came together to pull off this amazing event! Definitely a day I will remember for a long long time!”
MEMORIES TO TREASURE
“Cut on the solid line, and fold on the dotted line” was a phrase repeated multiple times – and translated to Portuguese equally many – as a small group of industrious young learners built Memory Treasure Boxes in the courtyard outside our Luanda store. Of the many activities in the Pizza Hut Red Reading Boxes, this was certainly the favorite of the day.
A SHOCKING STATISTIC
According to Unesco, over 280 million people in Africa cannot read. In Angola the literacy rate is comparatively low, with three out of 10 people unable to read.
As Pizza Hut, we understand that there is no quick fix, but we are making a difference in the best way we know how. And that’s why, with your help, we’re going to be turning pizza boxes into Red Reading Boxes and give as many of them as possible to Grade 4 learners in all the countries we serve, many of whom may never have owned their own book.
DONATIONS MAKE THIS POSSIBLE
All donations raised in a country, will go directly to creating Red Reading Boxes in that country which we plan to distribute on World Literacy Day on 8 September this year. These donations are of course bolstered by contributions from the Pizza Hut brand and team members.
Next stop on the Slice of Africa journey is Accra, Ghana!
Share this post, follow the journey, make a donation, and let’s get Africa reading!
